On April 27th, Nintendo released information to the public detailing their newest hardware. The New 2DS XL is a somewhat familiar handheld in the 3DS Family that serves as the successor to the original 2DS. In a video launched from the official Nintendo Youtube channel, the handheld’s features are highlighted.
These features include extra large screens, a c-stick, amiibo functionality, and fast processing power. Nintendo even boasts that this New 2DS XL, unlike its 2013 predecessor, has an “ergonomic folding design.” So basically, this one has hinges. Check out the video in its entirety right here.
Now, I am not a fan of Nintendo’s business practices in the slightest. And in general, I’m also not a fan of many of their game franchises. I personally think that the 2DS XL is ludicrous and unnecessary, but I am not who we’re talking about today. Instead, let’s look at what the fans think of the 2DS XL.
It’s been long enough now that most Nintendo fans have seen the news and had time to formulate their own thoughts and opinions on the 2DS XL. MMOExaminer’s own Gabriel Cavalcanti wrote about the new handheld and the lifespan of the 3DS family. So, what’s the general consensus? Will Nintendo’s newest hardware be a success or a failure?
Let’s start by taking a look at the New 2DS XL Reddit thread, where fans are continuing to argue among themselves. Reddit posters seem to be split between those who are excited for a relatively cheap and powerful console, and those who are confused as to why Nintendo is putting energy into anything other than the Switch and the 3DS. I tend to lean with the latter grouping of people myself.
While the New 2DS XL will pack all the processing power of a New 3DS with a cheaper price tag, they have also stated that they will continue to focus on the 3DS in the coming year. With 10 different iterations of the DS line and the recent discontinuation of the NES Classic, you could say that Nintendo has a bit of hardware heedlessness.
Even popular YouTube channels have discussed their confusion as to where the 2DS XL idea even came from. YouTube channel The Know put out a video two days ago discussing the news related to the 2DS XL announcement and were completely flabbergasted as to why Nintendo would split their focus from the newly released Switch.
It would seem that the general consensus is that there is no consensus. The New 2DS XL is a confusing bit of hardware to come out of Nintendo with impressive processing capabilities and a competitive price tag. Those that already own a New 3DS could very easily just turn the 3D off and save themselves the extra $150, but someone without a handheld, or perhaps someone looking to upgrade would do well to look into the New 2DS XL.
We won’t truly know how successful this new handheld will be until its release on July 28th, but I’m willing to guess it will be swept under the carpet with the other DS carcasses. But what do you think? Are you excited for the New 2DS XL or are you confused as to why Nintendo would release yet another handheld? Let us know!
