FINAL FANTASY XI

Despite FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn‘s stellar success after a catastrophic first release, Square Enix doesn’t seem to be giving up the now 14 years old FINAL FANTASY XI anytime soon.

FINAL FANTASY XI

Back in the first years of the 21st Century, the industry and the media witnessed a revolution when the PlayStation 2 debunked SEGA’s Dreamcast, their last console after a successful line up in the 80’s and 90’s. The Dreamcast was, with no doubt, the first console to make use of internet connectivity for online gameplay, but Sony nailed the feature just right with their sophomore hardware. Then, Square Enix announced two of their upcoming titles in the powerful FINAL FANTASY franchise to make use of the PS2’s online capabilities: FINAL FANTASY X, which would count with an online built in encyclopedia and forum, and FINAL FANTASY XI, a full fledged MMORPG. There was much skepticism regarding the latter, as turning one main entry in such a popular franchise into an online game was seen as bold and risky. Alas, after a bumpy Japanese launch stuffed with issues and a less than smooth localization, the very first FINAL FANTASY Online won the public’s heart and went on to live a fruitfully.

But, that’s enough history lesson for now! Today, November 10, it was announced that FINAL FANTASY XI will be holding another Return Home campaign for returning players. Unfortunately, if you just learned about the ancient yet beautiful MMO, that means you’re not eligible for the rewards.

Additionally, a Discount Campaign will be held starting November 11 until November 21. During this time, downloadable versions of the Seekers of Adoulin expansion pack and the FINAL FANTASY XI: Ultimate Collector’s Edition will be available for a discount of up to 67% through the Square Enix store! Furthermore, the World Transfer service will get a discount of 50%.

You can check the specifics of the campaigns on the official announcement page.

FINAL FANTASY XI‘s first release in the West was back in 2003 with the North American PC version. A spin-off called FINAL FANTASY Grandmasters was released in Japan in 2015. Square Enix is currently working with Korean game developer and publisher Nexon on a remastered version of FINAL FANTASY XI for mobile platforms.
