Day one of the Overwatch Winter Premiere closed out yesterday, with plenty of action in San Antonio. The day ended best for Luminosity Gaming, as well as the unexpected force to be reckoned with that is Renegades.

Overwatch Winter Premiere Day One

Heading into the main event for this tournament, everyone would have been in their right minds to expect great performances from FaZe Clan, who were swapped in for Fnatic after the Qualifiers. FaZe Clan had a recent second place finish at the MLG Las Vegas, where they were beat out by the powerhouse Team EnVyUs.

But day one of the Overwatch Winter Premiere proved to be a surprise for them, and not in a good way. Pitted against the unheard of and untested Renegades (previously known as Kingdom eSports) from Detroit, FaZe Clan probably expected a no contest. Instead, Renegades mopped the floor with them, calling it a day with FaZe Clan going 0-2 in the match up.

Meanwhile, Luminosity Gaming was also able to finish out undefeated in their contest against Citizen7. It could be a rough time for Citizen7, since they’ll be up against Renegades next, later today.

In the other matches of day one, compLexity Gaming finished on top in their match with Kungarna, 2-1. Also finishing the day 2-1 was Immortals over Team Liquid.

Day two will begin in a few hours, at 3:30PM PST. The Overwatch Winter Premiere, presented by NGE, will stream live via Twitch. The North American tournament, with a prize pool of $100,000, is the first major esports contest in the region for 2017. Eight teams will compete over the course of six days in a bo3 Round Robin tournament, at the end of which the bottom two teams will be eliminated. The remaining six teams will compete in another Round Robin, with the top four teams advancing to the Playoffs.
