When Marvel and Netflix teamed up to bring their street-level heroes (I.E. ones who wouldn’t necessarily be in the Marvel Cinematic Universe or its events) to the people via the service, there was always a goal in mind. First, they would have individual seasons of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist, and then…they would become the Defenders. The series have all happened, and now, the team up is almost here, and Netflix has finally shown it off.
The first trailer does a wonderful job showing the four very unlikely friends (or soon-to-be friends) meeting one another. From Matt bailing out Jessica, Claire Temple (played by Rosario Dawson) introducing Luke Cage to Danny Rand, and then, of course, the four coming together to fight as one. It’s a fun mini-origin if you will, one that will be fleshed out more when the season airs.
Astute fans will notice however that the trailer also shows off a lot of familiar faces, including Stick from Daredevil, Misty Knight from Luke Cage, and of course, the return of Elektra (who died at the end of Daredevil Season 02). But arguably most importantly, the trailer showed off the villain for the piece, Sigourney Weaver for the first time.
Though it’s not confirmed, it’s widely believed that she is the head of The Hand, an evil group that has shown up in two of the four Netflix shows, and has been revealed to have a big hand (no pun intended) in trying to control New York from many aspects. Though of course, it’s unclear what their ultimate goal is.
What makes Defenders so fun is the same thing that makes Avengers, or yes, even Justice League fun, seeing these clashing personalities work together and try to save the day. Even Jessica admits that whatever they are, they aren’t a team. But we all know that’ll change soon.
Defenders will arrive on Netflix with its entire 8-episode season August 18th.
