Despite being called Prey, the upcoming title from Bethesda is only loosely tied to the previous games in the franchise. And because of that, the story is something very different and unique. Many are OK with that, as both Bethesda and Arkane Studios are known for their storytelling. But what might surprise you is that the story of this particular Prey was inspired by a plane ride.
That’s right, Creative Director Raphael Colantonio was on a plane flying in the air when what he wanted to do for the game suddenly hit him. As he notes on the Bethesda site:
“I was on the plane, returning from a vacation, and it was a super long flight,” Colantonio recalls. “That’s when I wrote the main arc for Prey.”
Now, once he got back, he took to task to flesh out everything he had started on that long plane ride. Along the way, many other people got involved, and through that, a grand sci-fi epic was born.
But not only did the story reach full development, but so did the world that this Prey was set in. The game is set in an alternative take on history where President Kennedy survived and the space race was taken to new heights. Oh, and aliens invaded too, that happened. Additionally, the team wanted to flesh out the characters in the game so that they were more compelling, and not just paper cut outs. To do this, they contacted video game industry legend, and director of the cult classic Planescape: Torment, Chris Avellone to help out with the writing. He went to work on the character stories and admitted that many of the ones he wrote had some of his favorite moments in the game.
The game also features some very interesting design philosophies, and yet, it doesn’t mind using humor to break the enormous tension in the game. The team had fun bringing humor into Prey, and did it in some odd ways.
Prey is set for release on PC, Xbox One, Xbox 360, PS3 and PS4 on May 5th.
